TMJ
The temporomandibular joint is the complex connection between your jaw. It can move in almost any direction, including forwards and back, side to side, and up and down. With this unique flexibility, the joint is susceptible to a number of issues collectively known as temporomandibular joint disorder, sometimes called TMJ dysfunction or TMD.

Symptoms
- Jaw ache
- Earache
- Headache
- Clicking of the jaw
- Difficulty chewing
- Muscle spasms
- Locked jaw

Sleep Apnea
Many of the symptoms caused by sleep apnea can cause TMD. Bruxism, misalignment of the jaw, and jaw misplacement during sleep can all cause chronic jaw pain. The muscles of your face may struggle to hold your jaw in place in order to help you to breathe better throughout the night, or suffer from increased movement when your brain forces you to wake up in an attempt to restart breathing.

Treatment
With an oral appliance, sleep apnea can be kept at bay. Bruxing and jaw misalignment can be stopped by holding the jaw in the correct position throughout the night, preventing your airway from being blocked. Keeping the tissues from fully collapsing upon themselves will help you relax and get a restful sleep, helping to ease the stress on your jaw and prevent painful complications.
